Jig No.1 was born out of independent research that was conducted to further understand iterations' critical role in the design process. The idea behind this first “chair” was to allow designers to use it as a tool to rapidly explore a wide range of seat and backrest positions/combinations. Jig No. 1 provides designers with credibility because it makes their own ergonomic considerations tangible.
After designing this and discovering how useful of a tool it is for chair design,
it also became clear that there was also a lot of potential for it in the realm of client/designer communication. To make it more approachable, a printed pamphlet was designed and was displayed nearby, explaining the purpose of Jig No. 1 in detail. The pamphlet also includes an interactive page that encourages users to discover and log their ideal seating positions before tearing out the page and placing it into a nearby box.
